Contemporary Music Ensemble: Andrew Norman

  • Mary B. Galvin Recital Hall 70 Arts Circle Drive Evanston, IL, 60208 United States (map)

Alan Pierson and Ben Bolter conduct Northwestern University's Contemporary Music Ensemble performing guest composer Andrew Norman"Try," along with works by Helmut LachenmannAlex Mincek and Steve Reich.

Helmut Lachenmann's "Mouvement" seeks to "break down and build anew" audience members' perceptual apparatus through a fragmented sound world. With "Try", Norman offers fragmented sounds but to a different end; working out in musical form the difficulties of "getting right" in composition. Mincek's "Chamber Concerto" is a richly textured look at mechanical malfunction made in homage to György Ligeti's work by the same title. And Steve Reich's "Proverb" is a contemporary take on melismatic organum. This concert promises to be an exciting evening of ambitious music making.

Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with valid ID.
