NbN Trio, improvisations
Coppice, selections from Newly Cemented Dedication to Freedom, including fake Rhodes, real and fake air, copper filter, tubes, cymbal and brushes, multiple speakers, and “impossible objects.”
NbN Trio is a Chicago-based, acoustic, experimental improvisation trio made up of Nora Barton, Billie Howard, and Nomi Epstein. NbN explores sonic textures through manipulation of acoustic instruments. While the three instruments of the ensemble—cello, violin, and inside of the piano—monopolize the sound space, there is extensive involvement of found sound, and/or percussive instruments by all three members of the trio. The ensemble works carefully to investigate various color combinations between instrumental forces, while also creating juxtapositions of textural strata. Interests in sound dimensions include types of white noise, the juxtaposition of sound and noise, and the degree of clarity of pitch within sound.
NbN’s improvisations encourage the listener to investigate subtle aspects of sonic movement where sensory details become heightened through concentrated and focused listening. nbntrio.tumblr.com
Since its foundation in 2009, Coppice has departed from bellows and electronics to create compositions, installations, discography, instruments, arrangements for performance, software, and sculptural objects.
Drawing from its expanding glossary of study, they are currently focused on expansions and emulations of our sonic foundations (in bellows and electronics) using a newly designed musical infrastructure that departs from physical modeled instruments and modular synthesis.
Coppice is currently transitioning onto a new world of finer sonic illusions of digitally-seeded air, binary clocks, and impossible musical objects.futurevessel.com/coppice
