Ensemble Dal Niente at Constellation: Dal Niente Debuts

  • Constellation 3111 N Western Ave Chicago

(Dal Niente’s season kicks off with a program of works by composers new to Chicago, Ensemble Dal Niente, or both. This concert celebrates the group’s commitment to engaging Chicago’s vastly diverse new music scene and to bringing new art into the world.

The ensemble will perform Julio Zúñiga’s winning commission from a uniquely of-its-time competition: the YouTube-based Follow My Score commissioning project, which invited music fans to vote on their favorite video selected from an international pool of submissions. Dal Niente’s violin/piano duo of MingHuan Xu and Winston Choi (Duo Diorama) will tackle Christopher Wendell Jones’ A Crowd of Twisted Things, which the New York Classical Review describes as “a little aggressive, a little swaggering, meant to express, not impress.” Composer Sam Pluta will join the duo on electronics for the performance of hydra, a many-headed beast of a piece which synthesizes notated music, acoustic and electronic improvisations, and noise elements. And Cellist Chris Wild will perform the local premiere of Alex Mincek’s aptly-named Flutter.

With Zúñiga’s piece, the group participates in a radical new step in the history of music’s mode of production; meanwhile, chamber music works by recently-appointed composition faculty members across Chicago offer a glimpse at recent and future musical developments in our city.
