Tamas Vilaghy at Narloch Piano Studio

  • Narloch Piano Studio 4636 North Francisco Avenue Chicago, IL, 60625 United States (map)

Using a pair of turntables as a critical apparatus, Tamas will examine the idea of "traditional" (non-electronic) music through the lens of the DJ mix.

Dance music is about form, not content. There is something architectural in the way a DJ fits two tracks together, building a new audio spectrum. Dance music is concrete because it is self-consciously abstract.

Composed music has struggled to negotiate this relationship. As 20th century composers emptied out their music (atonalism, improvisation, aleatoricism, performativity, etc.), a crisis emerged: explicit themes and theatricality became the new content, at the cost of non-musicality. Composed music, self-consciously concrete, has become abstract.

The DJ mix, implying both juxtaposition and continuity, offers a synthesis. Engraved into vinyl records, even the most sublime compositions lose their abstract features, and become "mere" audio.

So come watch Tamas play some records.
